The planet Mekks used to be a space mine, but after the resources were used up, the natives spun various wires like thread to create the planet’s current state.
Grannest thrives on industry, which has sullied its environment and forced the native machines into space.
two more for tonight! mekks and grannest are the two planets with unmistakably mechanical natives.
the mekks native is a factory robot on a rotating base. mekks seems like kind of a success story of mechanical industry, so i imagine the robots are very skillful and proud of their achievements. unlike grannest, it’s left unclear where the organic originators of mekks went, but it’s possible they simply obsoleted themselves out of existence.
the robot workers of grannest are simplistic in design, but they all seem dilapidated and run down. they float around and belch smog out of their exhaust pipes every so often. on the orders of their masters, they mined grannest to the point where the planet now resembles an apple core, at which point pollution drove the native organics offworld and made it impossible for work to continue. now the robots ration their finite resources and protect what’s left of their planet in hopes that the natives will return one day.
Freaze is a planet in a perpetual winter, with fierce cold winds continually blowing over the surface. Freazers enjoy sliding their massive bodies on the ice.
i hope you guys don’t mind if i geek out over meteos for a minute
in meteos the most you ever see of the 40-odd alien species in the game are these crude super-simplified vector representations. this gives a neat effect where you can imagine the representations as the equivalent of pictograms or stick figures, the aliens using very simple visual shorthand to depict themselves as they see themselves and each other. the aliens could be vastly different from humans in body and habitat, but the pictograms allow them to represent themselves to other species. kind of like the Arecibo message.
freazers are 40m (130 feet!) tall, and the wiki says that their bodies are partially composed of solid ice. they almost seem like living mountains. but the in-game animations show them lifting and stomping their legs, so we know they’re actually legs and they are probably bipedal, which works with their mobile lifestyle.
the planet’s diameter is given as 1000 km. this gives it a surface area of rougly 2.2 million km², as opposed to earth’s 510 million km². with a population of 10,000 freazers, that’s 220 square kilometers per person, meaning the population of freaze is quite sparse compared to Earth, even as towering giants on such a small planet.
given that their planet is permanently below freezing, their biochemistry is probably based on liquid nitrogen or some other low-temperature solvent rather than water. the low temperatures combined with their massive body scale would make them a very slow-moving and slow-living species, making their sledding adventures particularly thrilling.
commission for ayn-rad of tabby from ac! thanks!!
